INTRODUCTION

Man through the ages have learned much from nature to live their life. The integration of various elements of nature has formed many magnificent structures that have long inspired them to build their own structures, and thus foster their civilization. The aerodynamic characteristics of bird’s wings have sparked the ideas to create the thing that can fly: ‘an airplane’, which is then further innovated by several modernist architects in designing various eco-friendly buildings that can maximize the breeze and at the same time minimize the wind load. So does other remarkable man-made structures that have been obviously inspired by nature, like the ‘palm oil tree- like’ of KLIA columns and shell-like roof of Sydney Opera House. This clearly shows that there are so many design elements in nature like lines, shapes, forms, colours, textures etc. that can be creatively ‘mimicked’ by man in building their own structures that can benefit all, not only mankind, but also mother nature that they have borrowed from their children.

OBJECTIVES

§  To enhance students’ understanding of  basic elements and principles of design through observation of existing natural and man-made structures.
§  To enhance students’ creativity in presenting their ideas selectively and graphically.
§  To nourish students’ skills in creative thinking, observation, sketching, rendering, colouring, writing description and composing graphical images.

TASKS & REQUIREMENTS

Project 2a: Natural Structure

§  Students are required to produce a black & white sketch of a natural structure that can be found around USM Main Campus e.g. trees & plants, insects, animals, other creatures etc.
§  The sketch should include the elements of light and shadow.
§  Students are also required to do write up (using ‘uppercase architectural lettering’) describing the object chosen for the sketch.
§  At the back of the mounting board, students should paste the actual photo (black & white) of the object chosen. Students also need to write the name of the object and the location where it is found below the photo.
§  Medium: 1 A3 size cartridge paper on board (standard template with landscape orientation: see Appendix A).
Project 2b: Man-Made Structure

§  Students are required to produce a coloured drawing of a man-made structure that can be found around USM Main Campus.
§  The man-made structure should not be more than one-storey height which clearly exposes its main structures like bus stop, car porch, covered pathway, wakaf etc.
§  In addition to the elements of light and shadow, the drawing should also include human figure as a reference of scale.
§  Students are also required to do write up (using uppercase architectural lettering) describing the object chosen for the drawing.
§  At the back of the mounting board, students should paste the actual photo foto (black & white) of the object chosen. Students also need to write the name of the object and the location where it is found below the photo.
§  Medium: 1 A3 size cartridge paper on board (refer standard template with landscape orientation below).

Type of Project                     : Individual
Medium / Final Product      : 2 A3 Size Cartridge Papers on boards (Portrait Orientation)
(Black & White Portrait Sketching, Coloured Logo Design & Pen Ink for Lettering),

INTRODUCTION

Men are the caliphs of the earth, created with the same purpose; to obey The Creator and to prosper the world (memakmurkan bumi). But, their tasks may differ slightly depending on their unique attitudes, interests, mindsets, talents and physicals traits (body shape, form, skin colours etc). So do the actors of the built environment i.e. architect, interior designer, urban & regional planner, building surveyor, building technologist, quantity surveyor, construction manager, contractor, developer etc. Although they are equipped with different expertise and bear different responsibilities, but they all share the same aim and move integratedly towards the same point: ‘a better built environment’. Thus, knowing about the self, particularly on our uniqueness, passion and strength is indeed vital in understanding the existence and importance of us here, which in turn not only benefit other actors in the built environment, but also the people at large.

OBJECTIVES

§  To stimulate students’ appreciation of beauty and aesthetics through an observation of themselves as the best of all creations (‘sebaik-baik kejadian’).
§  To encourage students to rediscover their true selves and be able to represent themselves graphically using basic design elements like lines, shapes, forms and colours.
§  To introduce students with basic sketching & drawing techniques, lettering, writing description and composing graphical images.
§  To introduce students with the importance and responsibilities of every actor in built environment

TASKS & REQUIREMENTS

Project 1a: Stewardship

§  Students need to sketch their own face (self-portrait) with a pencil (black & white)
§  The portrait should not be more than 100mm x 100mm size
§  Students also need to write some descriptions about themselves, by describing their:
i)                     Personal background
ii)                   How they see themselves in 5 years later
iii)                  As an architect / interior designer / urban & regional planner / building surveyor / building technologist / quantity surveyor / or construction manager, what can they contribute for the betterment of the built environment
§  The descriptions should be hand-written (pen ink) using ‘uppercase architectural lettering’.
§  Medium: 1 A3 size cartridge paper on board (refer standard template (portrait orientation) below).

Project 1b: Personal Logo

§  Students need to create a ‘PERSONAL LOGO’ (as their ‘personal branding’) that best reflects their personality and strengths.
§  The logo design should contain a maximum of 3 colours.
§  Students also need to clarify the design of the logo by describing the rationales for design elements used (such as line, shape, form, colour etc).
§  The descriptions should be hand-written using ‘uppercase architectural lettering’(pen ink) and the logo design should not be more than 200mm x 200mm size.
§  Medium: 1 A3 size cartridge paper on board (refer standard template (portrait orientation) below).

SUBMISSION (Project 1a & 1b)

Project Issued      : 09 September 2013 (Monday)
Submission Date : 20 September 2013 (Friday) at 9.00am (to Group Coordinator)

Project 1c: Virtual Portfolio

§  Each student needs to create a personal VIRTUAL PORTFOLIO (i.e. a BLOG) as a medium of visual communication in sharing their studioworks with people at large.
§  The blog can be obtained free of charge from any available domain/blog provider (e.g. blogspot.com).
§  Students should provide and set the blog with these following sections:
i)                     Studioworks – (will be uploaded with all photos or scanned copy of the studio projects with some descriptions in 2 or 3 sentences)
ii)                   Sketches- (will be uploaded with some photos or scanned copy of selected sketches from the student’s sketchbook)
iii)                  Fotolog– (will be uploaded with photos related to the ‘studio life’ or ‘extra/outdoor studio activities’ like academic trip, esquisse, site visit, seminar etc., if any)
iv)                 Essay – (will be filled with a ‘100 words essay‘ that summarizes what the student’s have learned from RUS104 Studio during this semester)
§  Students should also include in their blog the link to the MAIN WEBSITE OF THE RUS104 2013/2014 (http://www.hbp.usm.my/RUS1042013/main.html)
§  The precise address (link) of the student’s personal blog must be e-mailed to Studio Coordinator’s email (mazran@usm.my) before 11.00pm, 18.09.2013 (Wednesday).
§  All links of the students’ blog then will be displayed in the RUS104 website (‘LINK’ section) to be accessed and evaluated by studiomasters (from time to time).
